¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ Symphony Orchestra May 5 concert features Concerto Competition winners

The ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ricardo Averbach, presents a special concert featuring the top three winners of ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ’s 2023 Concerto Competition at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in Hall Auditorium. The concert is free.
The program includes:
- Matt Silva de Souza, a master’s in Music Performance graduate student from Brazil, who will perform Mozart’s 2nd Horn Concerto.
- Franklin Sandoval, a master’s in Music Performance graduate student, who will perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto. Sandoval is a two-time winner of the University of North Florida’s Concerto Competition, his alma mater.
- Alec Reder, a junior Music Education major, who will perform “Fantasia for Alto Saxophone” by Claude Smith.
This year, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of the ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ Orchestra program, the Department of Music created a Composition Competition for ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ students. Ezra Simmons, a sophomore Flute Performance and Music Composition double major, won with his composition “Daydreams from the Countryside.”
Simmons’ composition will be premiered by the MUSO.
