The Crafter License is a program that allows independent artisans to participate in ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ's licensing program by legally producing product adorned with ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ's brand (including but not limited to word marks, trademarks, logos and/or symbols). This license is ideal for fans and alumni who are interested in producing small quantities of merchandise for craft fairs and online marketplaces instead of at retail stores.

Through this program, a crafter enters into a simple contract with ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ that grants permission to produce and sell licensed ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ product.

Benefits of the Program

  • The individual can legally profit from the goodwill associated with ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ’s brand.
  • Royalties paid to ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ fund student scholarships.

Requirements

Crafter licensees must meet the following requirements:

  • Enter into a one year contract with the University.
  • Pay a $100 advance royalty fee at the beginning of each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
  • Submit a non-¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ sample of the each product to the Office of Trademarks and Licensing for review and approval prior to production of the ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ product.
  • Submit a mock-up of the ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ product to the Office of Trademarks and Licensing for review and approval prior to production.
  • Order and display the official “Collegiate Licensed Product” hologram sticker on all ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ licensed products.
    • The sticker is available upon request from ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ.
  • Sell licensed ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ products directly to the consumer (i.e. festivals, craft fairs, events, and/or online). Sales to third party retailers or distributors are not permitted.
  • Sell no more than 500 items or $2,000 worth of merchandise.  If either limit is reached in a single year or cumulatively over multiple agreements, a standard license must be obtained.
    • If in a fiscal year sales exceed $2,000, submit an additional royalty payment to the University at the end of the year (June 30).

Application

Below are the steps of the crafter license application process:

  • Submit the crafter license , a non-¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ sample of your product, and a $100 royalty advance fee to the Office of Trademarks and Licensing.
    • Checks should be made out to “¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ”.
    • The royalty advance fee will not be deposited until the application has been approved. If the application has been denied, the fee will be returned to the applicant.
  • Once the Office of Trademarks and Licensing has received the application, sample and royalty advance fee, the application request will be reviewed.
  • If the application is approved, a Crafter License Agreement will be sent to the applicant for review and signature.
  • The agreement should be returned to the Office of Trademarks and Licensing for execution.
  • Once the agreement has been executed, a copy of the agreement will be sent to the newly licensed crafter.
  • After the licensee receives a copy of the executed agreement, artwork and design development may begin. A mock-up of the ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ product must be sent to the Office of Trademarks and Licensing for review and approval prior to production.
  • Once the mock-up has been approved, the crafter may produce that item without getting further approvals for one calendar year. If the licensee would like to use a new design or produce a different product, approval must be granted by the Office of Trademarks and Licensing prior to production and sale.
