Survey finds many Ohio nursing homes havenÂ’t developed emergency plans with local agencies

More than four out of five of OhioÂ’s counties have had a federally declared major disaster declaration in the past decade. On any given day in Ohio's nursing homes, there are nearly 78,000 residents with physical or cognitive impairments. To protect them from harm, nursing homes develop emergency preparedness plans to cover situations in which their staff and residents may need to evacuate or shelter in place. In collaboration with the Ohio Departments of Aging, Health and Emergency Management, ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ Scripps Gerontology Center researchers examined preparedness and planning in Ohio nursing homes.

Researchers at ¾Ã¾ÃË®ÃÛÌÒ Scripps Gerontology Center say nearly all of OhioÂ’s nursing homes have plans in place to respond to emergencies, but not enough facilities are coordinating efforts with hospitals, emergency responders and public health officials.

Our staff developed a new online course with Boston University that shares lessons learned from high-performing home care agencies and nursing homes. The goal of the course is to assist long-term care organizations in improving the management of their direct care workforce.
